With customizable light hues and forms, SHONE LED brick lights and LED wall tiles serve as a bridge between past and present. They integrate into existing structures with minimal intervention, using the language of light to revive the spirit of place and strengthen community identity. This article presents technical applications of LED brick lights in historic district and residential projects.
Nanjing Yihe Road Historic and Cultural District – Pilot Demonstration Zone
Yihe Road is one of the first 30 officially recognized historic and cultural districts in China. The initial demonstration zone, situated along Ninghai Road, was redeveloped under the principle of "repairing the old to reflect the old, integrating heritage with innovation." Led by an academic team headed by Tongji University's Professor Chang Qing, the project combines architectural heritage with commercial space, creating a fresh urban cultural landmark for Nanjing.
In selected sections of the district, SHONE LED brick lights were installed for landscape lighting. Controlled via a DMX512 system, the tiles enable dynamic color changes as pedestrians pass by. This interactive feature adds a layer of playful engagement to the historical setting, allowing visitors to experience both the city's memory and its contemporary vitality.
Blackstone M+
Built in 1924, the Blackstone Apartments were once Shanghai's most expensive residences. Today, this iconic structure has been transformed into the vibrant lifestyle district: Blackstone M+. The Blackstone M+ complex is a mixed-use development centered around music, integrating retail, offices, and apartments.
The landscape design echoes the Blackstone Apartments with dark grey brick walls. Against this deep-toned backdrop, the white fountain water effects appear exceptionally clear and refined. Water cascades down the layered brick walls, creating a dynamic and lively atmosphere.
A key feature at the main entrance is the Music Wall. Its dark brickwork continues the homage to the Blackstone Apartments. Here, the designers innovatively employed Shone LED wall tiles. These LED wall tiles feature a customized blue-brick texture surface. During the day, they resemble ordinary dark bricks.
